The Medal of Honor Memorial in Indianapolis is one of three congressionally-approved memorial sites in the nation. On March 22, Indianapolis will commemorate the 25th anniversary of this cherished landmark. Kent Abernathy is President of the Indiana War Memorials Foundation.

Chartered by Congress in 1958, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s membership is limited to those who wear the Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest military award for valor.

Kiwanian John Shertzer, a board member of the Kiwanis Club of Northwest Indianapolis. From 2010-2017 he served as Kiwanis International’s Chief Programs Officer and led all Kiwanis Youth Programs. Prior to joining the CMOHS in 2022, he was executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists, founded and led the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council, and served as Program Director of Leadership Indianapolis, which operates the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Series. He also held a senior role with the North American Interfraternity Conference, serving the needs of undergraduate members, alumni members and professional association staff and board members. He earned a master’s degree in higher education from Iowa State and a bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He participates in many volunteer and professional activities and has published a book and several articles about leadership.
